CAERNARFON Town lost ground on Welsh Alliance Division One leaders Holywell Town, as they were edged out 2-1 at Denbigh Town.
The Canaries were playing their first game under caretaker manager Colin Saynor, who filled in after predeccesor Steve Smith left the club by mutual consent last week.
Saynor’s side started brightly by creating an early opening for striker Jay Whitmore, whose finish drifted narrowly wide.
On thirteen minutes, Llion Jones worked his way into the opposition box and slipped in Cai Jones, whose shot on the turn beat the home keeper and nestled into the corner of the net to give his side an early lead.
Jones then set up strike partner Whitmore, who again put his effort agonisingly wide.
As the half went on Denbigh enjoyed some possession of their own, and forced ‘keeper Neil Perkins into two excellent saves.
They maintained the pressure, and were rewarded with a penalty just before half time, which Ceri James successfully dispatched.
The second half was a more open affair as both sides chased victory. Whitmore had another effort saved, while Jack James saw his long-range curled effort strike the post.
Denbigh looked treatening in attack, but it took a defensive mix-up to hand the hosts the lead, Ian Griffiths benefitting to score what proved to be the winning goal.
