RHYL’S young squash ace Tesni Evans has reached a new career high after being rated number 60 in the world in the first global rankings of 2012.
The Stars Academy international came within a whisker of launching the new year as Wales champion when she was cruelly pipped 11-9 in the injury-marred climax of the Welsh Closed championships in Cardiff.
Tesni’s younger sister Lauren came eighth in the tournament with Academy team-mates Hannah Davies taking fourth place and Jordan Davies placed sixth in the mens A event.
All three players linked up to represent Wales at the home international match against Scotland in Edinburgh with Tesni winning 4 out of 4, Hannah 2 out of 3 and Jordan 2 out of 4 as Wales won the ladies event but lost the mens match.
In the North Wales League, defending champions Saints A got off to a flying start with a 5-0 rout of promoted Holywell, courtesy of Mark Thomas, Emyr Evans, Will Powell, George Thomas and Lauren Evans while promoted Saints C were narrowly beaten 3-2 by Kent Supplies, Liam Jones and Sam Wallace taking them close.
Saints B fell 4-1 at St Asaph, Simon Bryan their lone winner as Sandy Stewart, Mark Evans, Russ Morris and Duncan Cameron secured St Asaph’s success while Saints D just fell 3-2 to Deeside, Steve Harris on his debut and Simon Noon their victors.
