A FISHERMAN who went missing off the Anglesey coast has been named.

Steven Craig Robertson, aged 25, of Dalbeattie, Scotland, went missing when his vessel was in the waters of Caernarfon Bay on Friday.

Coastguards received a call at 2.29am from a fishing boat reporting a missing crew member who had last been seen onboard at 12.45am, when the vessel was around a mile west of South Stack.

Coastguard and lifeboat teams from across the island as well as the search and rescue helicopter from RAF Valley took part in the search, which covered a fifty square mile area of Caernarfon Bay, but he was not found.

Watch manager Jim Green said every effort to find the fisherman, who was not wearing a lifejacket, had been made.

“The weather in the area was North Westerly F4 with a calm sea and slight swell, the water temperature was eight degrees,” he said.

“He was not wearing a lifejacket.

“We strongly recommend that all fishermen should wear lifejackets whilst operating on fishing vessels.”

Station manager Ray Carson said the search was called off at 3pm.

"I'm fairly confident that if he had been at the surface we would have seen him in these conditions," he said.

North Wales Police said the man's family in Scotland had been informed.
