POLICE are investigating after a young rugby player was left fighting for his life in Bethesda.
Bethesda RFC player Gerallt Jones, 24, of Fferm Coetmor, was injured as he walked along the High Street during the early hours of New Year’s Day.
Club Chairman Huw Jones expressed the shock felt by everyone at the club at the incident.
"It's frightening that such a thing could happen to one of the lads. He's a quiet and good lad. If everyone were like him, there would be no trouble," he said.
Mr Jones is currently in Walton Hospital, where his injuries are described as being life threatening.
Mr Jones added that some of Gerallt's team mates would deliver a get well card when they visit him at the hospital today (Friday, January 6).
"He came up through the ranks at the club from the minis, youths and seconds, and has just broken into the first team," he said.
The club plans to hold a raffle on Saturday after their next home game against Llandudno on Satuday, January 13.
Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident.
Detective Sergeant Brian Kearney said that officers were conducting enquiries to ascertain the circumstances that led to the man’s injuries.
"We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen a man being assaulted in Bethesda during the early hours of the morning of New Year’s Day and also to anyone who has seen anything unusual during the later stages of the morning up to 11am,” he said.
Anyone who may have information about the incident should contact DS Kearney on 101 if in Wales or 03003300101.
