A DIAMOND couple were honoured by the Queen - six decades after meeting at her namesake dance hall.
Dilys and Wynne Williams of Rhyl are spending their 60th anniversary in Spain after celebrating with their family and receiving a card from a certain member of the royal family.
Dilys, aged 81, originally of Denbigh, met Wynne, 82 originally of Abergele, at Queen’s Dance Hall in Rhyl when they were aged just 17 and 18.
Daughter Val Morris, from Rhyl, said: “Their first date was going to the Odeon cinema in Rhyl. They got engaged December 1949 and married at St Anne’s Church on Vale Road on January 5 1952.
“Wynne was a telephone engineer and a keen union representative and Dilys a wIndow dresser for Marks and Spencer. She ran a guest house and returned to M&S in later years.”
The couple had two children, Val and Barry, although Barry died in 1993.
Wynne, who was a wireless operator in a Lancaster bomber towards the end of World War Two, is still a keen jet-setter.
Val said: “They have been big travellers. We’ve always had a holiday since 1963, mostly around Europe. They’ve also been to America and toured round there.
“Golf is a big part of the family, and they have both been captains of Rhuddlan Golf Club. Wynne has been a member for over 50 years.”
The Williams’ love of the sport has been passed down the generations, with Val, son in law Dave and grandchildren Charlotte and Sam following in their footsteps.
Val said: “Dilys and Wynne continue to play golf regularly, and go sequence dancing at least four times a week at different clubs. They also help look after their grandchildren.
“I think in all the years I lived with them, I never heard them row.
“That’s an achievement in itself. They both have a really good positive mental attitude. Both my parents have a zest for life, and enjoy life to the full. Brilliant parents.”
