SCHOOLS on Anglesey could be closed or merged under proposals for a reshuffle to tackle falling pupil numbers.
Anglesey Council commissioners will discuss proposals for Ysgol Y Parc, Ysgol Llanfawr, Ysgol Llaingoch, Ysgol Kingsland and Ysgol y Parchedig Thomas Ellis at a meeting on Monday, January 9.
The move comes after the authority secured a £3.95 million Welsh Government grant to build a new primary school in Holyhead.
A report by schools modernisation manager Emrys Bebb said that modernising and rationalising school provision in Holyhead could reduce the surplus places to around 10 percent, based on projections for 2011-12.
“Considering the five schools, there are currently 280 surplus places in them which is equivalent to 26 per cent,” he added.
Ysgol y Parc has the highest surplus of the five schools, with 73 out of a possible 228 places currently empty.
Ysgol Morswyn and St Mary’s School are exempt from the process.
The proposals also include reviews of schools in central, east and north western catchment areas.
Mr Bebb explained that primary pupil numbers on the Island had fallen by 1,146 since 1996, and surplus places cost the council £568,000 last year.
“There is no likelihood of pupil numbers increasing to the levels seen in the mid 1990s, even if the Wylfa B development goes ahead,” he said.
If the proposals are approved, education officers would prepare several possible options for the Commissioners by the end of August 2012.
