TRANSPORT Minister Carl Sergeant has announced measures to advance plans for the Bontnewydd-Caernarfon bypass.

Mr Sergeant announced yesterday that advisors to take forward the A487 development would be appointed during this financial year.

He explained that the route is part National Transport Plan’s (NTP) key focus of improving the Welsh transport system to help tackle poverty and assist economic growth.

“The schemes prioritised in the National Transport Plan demonstrate our commitment to delivering solutions to the transport problems that people face every day in Wales.

“To make the road network more efficient we will need to be more agile and take an innovative approach to find solutions that can be delivered more quickly,” he said.

Gwynedd councillor Christopher Hughes, who represents Bontenewydd ward, commended thet Welsh Government for taking the scheme forward.

However, he added: “It’s hard to comment further until they have chosen the route.”
The NTP also includes measures to ease congestion on the Britannia Bridge, but the structure will not be widened in the near future.
