A BANGOR man will be the honourable exception to the rule at a women-only fundraising event.
Steven Blundell will join around 60 ladies for the 10-mile Bras 4 Boobs sponsored walk for Breast Cancer Care on Sunday in place of his wife Susan, who is fighting the disease for the second time.
“I’m so glad that I managed to convince the organiser to let me register for the ladies only event even if it does mean wearing a bra for the day,” he said.
Susan, 41, beat breast cancer 12 years ago, but was diagnosed for the second time on her wedding anniversary in August.
“Clearly we were devastated when we heard it had come back, but we’re determined that she’ll pull through again,” Steve said.
“As family and friends we are doing all we can to raise awareness and vital funds towards charities like Breast Cancer Care Cymru.”
The walkers will start at Bangor Pier, walk to Llanfairpwll and back.
Susan is undergoing chemotherapy and cannot take part, but will cheer Steve along the route.
“I was delighted - if not a little surprised, given that he has to wear a bra for the occasion - when Steven said he’d like to do it in my place.
“When I was first diagnosed I was only 29 so age makes no difference - women should get themselves checked however old they are.”
Organiser Simone Roberts hoped that the events like Bras 4 Boobs would help to raise awarness of the diseases, particulary among younger people.
“We’re so happy to have Steven join us on Sunday,” she said. “Breast cancer touches so many people.
“My grandmother sadly lost her battle with cancer seven years ago and I wanted to do something to celebrate the lives of special people like her.
“I’ve been overwhelmed by the support so far and I know everybody’s getting very excited. I’d like to thank all the wonderful ladies - and gentleman - taking part, as well as all our sponsors and volunteers.”
