NEWTOWN Rugby Club is appealing for people with old photos of players and matches to come forward as part of their 40th anniversary celebrations.
The club is hosting a weekend of events as part of the celebrations from December 2 to 4.
Organiser Owen Davies said: “During the last 40 years, have you played for Newtown at any level, helped out in any way, supported or sponsored the club? We are inviting all former players and supporters to attend our celebrations over the weekend of December 2, 3 and 4.”
Mr Davies also appealed for anyone who can help with items from the club’s history to come forward.
He said: “Can you Help – do you have or know anybody who has any old photos of players or matches from the last 40 years? We would like to scan these to display on the evening of the celebration. We promise to return them to you safely!”
Mr Davies explained that the three days would be full of events catering for all ages.
He said: “On Friday, December 2, we will be holding a ‘Ladies Night’. An evening for all the women who have helped and supported the club over the last 40 years.
Support comes in many guises, from helping out on match days, fundraising, or just getting the lads to the games on time.
“For this, we want to thank you. It promises to be a night full of fun and entertainment including a meal and disco, all for only £10. Come and have a great night! Check out the club website for ticket information or talk to a member.”
On Saturday, December 3, the day will begin at 12.30pm with a snack lunch before a re-match of the inaugural game for the club in 1971 as a Newtown President’s XV take on a Welshpool Select XV at 1.30pm.
Following the match it will be back to the clubhouse where people can meet up with old friends while watching the Wales v Australia match.
At 6.30pm the formal celebrations begin with a three course meal at the marquee and a full night of celebrating 40 years of rugby in Newtown.
Mr Davies added: “If you have played in any Newtown side over the last 40 years, please come and meet up with your old friends – this day is for you. Tickets for the night will be £20 with all profits going to the club.”
To round off the weekend, Sunday will be a day for the kids, with fun and games and barbecue starting at 2pm. Anyone with information or memorabilia or who wishes to obtain tickets can visit www.newtownrugby.co.uk or email 40year@newtownrugby.co.uk
