Olympic torch to visit Gwynedd and Anglesey

THE route of the Olympic torch procession has been announced- and now Anglesey will join Gwynedd in welcoming the flame when it comes to Wales in May next year.

Originally, the Olympic Torch Relay was scheduled to visit four locations in Wales, one of which was Bangor Pier.

However, the full route, which was announced on Monday, will see the Olympic torch visit Menai Bridge and Beaumaris, as well as Caernarfon, Y Felinheli and Bangor, before it heads along the North Wales coast to Chester.

The torch will even head up to the summit of Snowdon on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, which will be the highest point of its trip at 3,560 feet.

Anglesey MP, Albert Owen, who earlier this year led calls to bring the torch to Anglesey, said he was “ delighted” it would now be visiting the Island.

“When the original route was revealed and I saw that Anglesey was not on it, I immediately felt the organisers were missing a trick,” he said.

“I met with Lord Coe to make the case for including Anglesey on the torch route.
“He was very receptive and having visited the Island in the past was aware of all it has to offer.

“It’s great news that the organisers have taken all this on board and decided to include Anglesey on the route.

“This is going to be a really exciting event and I would urge communities from across the Island to join in with the celebrations.”

The torch will be in the region on Monday, May 28, and Tuesday, May 29, and will be carried by torchbearers who will be nominated for their personal achievements or contributions to the local community.

The successful nominees will be announced in February next year.
