Big step forward for Rhos crossing

CAMPAIGNERS for a crossing are “ecstatic” after a decision to press ahead with the project.

Residents and shopkeepers worried about a loss of parking and loading areas if the Penrhyn Road crossing was installed had delayed the road safety initiative.

But after a meeting called by AM Darren Millar to discuss concerns, Conwy County Borough Council has agreed to protect resident parking and provide additional loading bays as part of the crossing scheme.

The project has been spearheaded by local resident Lyndsay French, who raised more than £10,000 in the community to pay for the crossing.

Mr Millar said: “Local residents have been incredibly frustrated at the delays in delivering a crossing on Penrhyn Avenue so I’m glad that the council is now moving full steam ahead.
“The crossing will make a big difference to safety for residents, especially pupils getting to and from local schools.
Although there is still no starting date for the crossing Ms French said it was “a step in the right direction”.

She said: “I’m ecstatic! We’ve got a solution now and something is going to happen. I think it’s going to take a bit longer because Highways will have to come and remeasure, but the future is looking a bit brighter.”

Cllr Roger Parry said: “It can’t come a moment too soon for local residents.”

Cllr Merfyn Thomas said the loading bays near the shops would address the concerns of local shopkeepers whilst still allowing the crossing to go ahead.

"The crossing has my full support," he added
