Is bilingual welcome a sign of the times?

AN iconic welcoming sign to a prominent tourist town is set for a biligual re-design.

The sign bearing the phrase Llandudno Welcomes You, which sits at the top of Penrhyn Hill, between Penrhyn Bay and the Little Orme, is set for a facelift.

Llandudno Town Council's decorative lighting sub-committee requested that the sign be changed to show Croeso i Llandudno Welcomes You, thereby welcoming visitors to the town in both Welsh and English.

The sign has started to show signs of wear and deterioration, and the sub-committee sought quotes for its refurbishment.

Cllr Ann Yates, who represents Penrhyn ward and also sits on the decorative lighting committee, said that the town council had inspected the wear on the sign, and learnt that quotes to replace it were not significantly higher than the cost of a refurbishment.

She said: "That is the welcome sign into Llandudno and it stands proud on top of the hill. I'm very pleased this is going ahead."

The Town Council have put requests for the new design for the sign to Lumalite, who will also be working on the town's Christmas lights.
