Job boost for Llandudno Sainsbury's

A MAJOR supermarket has confirmed it will be moving into an empty Llandudno shop.

The former Alworths store on Mostyn Street will become a Sainsbury's Local, creating up to 25 new jobs.

A spokesman for the supermarket said the town centre site, which they hoped to have open next year, will have a sales area of nearly 3,000 square feet, and stock a range of 'every-day products' between 7am-11pm.

The store will also support local charities through Sainsbury’s Charity of the Year programme, which gives year round support to a local charity and provide sports equipment to nearby schools and nurseries through the Active Kids Scheme.

Paul Smith from Sainsbury’s convenience property team, said: “Bringing a Sainsbury’s Local to Llandudno will create jobs and deliver greater choice and value for local people.
"Our Local shops cater for the immediate community and are particularly well used by those people unable to drive further a field for their shopping. We believe the Sainsbury's Local store will offer many advantages to the community and nearby traders through added investment, new jobs and increased footfall.”

The Mostyn Street retail site has had a turbulent history since former occupier Woolworths closed on December 27 in 2008, ahead of the company going into administration.

In April 2009, Publishers Book Clearance (PBC) Discount Book Store moved into the site, which was then taken over by Alworths in August, 2010 before closing earlier this year.

Llandudno Town Councillor, Mark Jones, welcomed the announcement.
He said: “I'm pleased to see the empty shop being filled. Sainsbury's is a unique brand and a unique type of shop with a loyal customer base.
“It could well be it brings people into the top of town. There may be a knock on effect for businesses - some positive and some negative - but on the whole it's a positive step in the right direction.”
