A MAN caused a major search and rescue operation after he jumped into the Menai Strait last Friday.

Coastguard teams and the Beaumaris RNLI lifeboat joined the Police and RAF Valley helicopters in the search for the man, who was being pulled by the tide in the direction of Beaumaris, after entering the strait by Menai Bridge at around 10.40pm.

A coastguard spokesman refused to say why the man entered the water, however the search was called off after the man exited the strait on the Bangor side.

The Beaumaris RNLI crew were then called out once again on Saturday, at 6.20pm, after two jet skiers from Colwyn Bay had run aground on a sandbank between Penmaenmawr and Friar's Bay.

The team had to wait until the tide returned at 10.40pm before they could bring the jet skiers back ashore.
