ANGLESEY is set to receive an economic boost after being named as an enterprise zone by the Welsh Government.

The Island will be used to promote growth in the energy industry and is one of five zones across Wales, each with their own specialist area.

The Welsh government has said it will make £10 million available to encourage development across the zones, which also include Deeside, Cardiff Central, Ebbw Vale, and St Athan, in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Anglesey AM, Ieuan Wyn Jones, gave a cautious welcome to the announcement.
“I welcome this announcement as we need to maximize the economic benefits to the people of Anglesey as we develop the energy island concept further,” he said.

“Jobs are vital in this day and age, nowhere more so than here in Anglesey.
“We have to make the most of what we’ve got and energy is one sector where Anglesey can lead.

“The detail is a bit thin at the moment so I will be pressing the Minister to explain what benefits and tax concessions will be available to businesses wishing to invest in Anglesey.”

The announcement was made by Welsh business minister Edwina Hart on Monday.

Exact details have not yet been revealed, however it is expected that the zones will offer companies incentives to move to the zones, such as tax concessions, high speed broadband and easier planning regulations.

There are already 21 enterprise zones in England.

Ms Hart said: “We have an opportunity to take a targeted approach in Wales and design a bespoke Welsh solution that doesn’t just automatically replicate the approach taken in England.

“We will also continue to deliver on our commitments to strengthen the conditions that will enable business to create jobs and sustainable economic growth across Wales.”

The news comes as a major report into Anglesey’s future as an “Energy Island” pointed towards a rosy future.

The report by ESYS Consulting concluded that the wide range of energy schemes planned for the Island, including the Wylfa B development, as well as the proposed tidal project next to the Skerries and the biomass plant in Hoylyead, could create 2,000 jobs by 2025, plus 6,000 temporary construction roles.
