BUDGET hotel chain Travelodge has spelled out its plans for the eyesore Clarence Hotel in Llandudno.

The firm has exchanged contracts with the Northhold Group to operate an 83 bedroom hotel on Gloddaeth Street bringing 60 permanent jobs to the town.

The Northhold Group is expected to submit a planning application to Conwy County Borough Council by the middle of September to refurbish the building but retaining its heritage. They will also bring in new tenants to the ground floor shop units.

Tony O’Brien, UK Development Director of Travelodge Hotels, said: “We have been looking for the right opportunity, near to the seafront in Llandudno, for some time and the Clarence Hotel site is perfect for our customers. It is in a great location and we intend to completely refurbish it to a new Travelodge specification. There are currently no branded budget hotels in the town centre and we are sure that Travelodge will attract new visitors to the town, to experience and enjoy the benefits of the area.
“If planning permission is granted then we hope to re-open the hotel in 2012, creating 60 jobs for the local community in conjunction with the ground floor units.”

Cllr Greg Robbins, the Mayor of Llandudno, said he was “very, very pleased” the hotel will be undergo sensitive restoration, along with the new jobs.

He said: “It is a very visible building. A lot of people who visit the town and residents coming in to Llandudno pass it. To stop the hotel being left derelict is very important.”

Cllr Robbins also hoped the addition of the budget hotel would help encourage a broader demographic of holidaymakers in to Llandudno.

He said: “I certainly think it will bring in a different kind of visitor into Llandudno - people who may stay for one or two nights who have never been to the town and are encouraged to come again and stay longer in one of other more traditional, wonderful hotels when they see what fantastic things Llandudno has to offer.”
