THE doors of a three million pound renewable energy centre are about to open to students for the first time.
Coleg Menai's principal Dafydd Evans believed that the centre, which is located on the Llangefni campus, would provide first class training and educational facilities for students when term begins in September.
“We're all aware how vital the energy industries is, not just to the region, but to the whole UK economy,” he said.
The centre will offer specialised courses for young people to train to work in the energy industry, as part of the Anglesey Energy Island scheme.
Anglesey Energy Island programme director Sasha Wynne Davies said that the opening of Coleg Menai's Energy Centre facility was a huge step forward for Coleg Menai in establishing itself in energy sector educational provision.
“Coleg Menai have been an active partner of the Energy Island Programme from day one, and the potential opportunities in this energy sector for Coleg Menai, it's students and apprentices is incredibly exciting," she added.
The energy centre will also house the most advanced welding and fabrication facilities in Wales, a business innovation department and first-class conference amenities.
Director of the site’s builders Annwyl Construction, Tom Annwyl was delighted to hand over the keys to the building to Coleg Menai.
"This is important not just from the point of view of keeping the money for the contract in North Wales so consolidating jobs and the local economy, but also for developing and maintaining vital skills here which is also what the new building is very much about,” he said.
"Much of the work we have done here is very advanced, particularly in relation to the provision of renewable energy, and we are very pleased with how it has gone and are delighted to have played our part in the future development of the college."
