OLYMPIC fever has hit a Wrexham Primary School.

Pupils from Gwenfro Community Primary School, Queensway, were joined by a very special guest for their sports day – Wenlock, one of the official mascots for the London 2012 Olympic games.

The children took part in an Olympic-themed sports day to celebrate Wenlock’s arrival and took turns representing different countries in a variety of events that included tag rugby, football, tennis and an obstacle relay race.

After a close competition throughout the day Great Britain and Kenya emerged as joint winners of the Gwenfro Mini-Olympics and the children were awarded with winners’ medals by Wenlock, which displayed the Gwenfro badge on the front.

Wenlock decided to visit the school after pupils entered the Olympic ‘get set to make your mascot’ competition where they had to design their own Wenlock which best represented their community.

The talented youngsters beat competition from hundreds of other schools with their design and, along with recently retired PE co-ordinator Margaret Underwood, were invited to London to see the Olympic Park and give a presentation to officials about the design of their mascot.

The school was delighted to be crowned winners for Wales and were promised a visit by Wenlock on their annual sport’s day

Wenlock kept his promise and arrived at the school for the Gwenfro Mini-Olympics and was joined by Mayor of Wrexham Cllr Ian Roberts and Lawrence Isted, Wrexham Council’s head of community, wellbeing and development.

Mrs Underwood said: “The children had a brilliant time and it’s certainly been one of the most exciting sports days I’ve ever been involved with.”
