Busiest day in years at region’s polling stations

THE region went to the polls yesterday in one of the busiest days at the ballot box for years.

Ninety-nine polling stations in Flintshire and 100 across Wrexham and Clwyd South were open as residents cast their votes.

Along with the rest of Wales, people in Flintshire and Wrexham voted in two separate polls – one to determine the make up of the National Assembly and the other on how MPs are elected to Parliament.

For the Assembly elections, voters were given separate ballot papers for constituency and regional AMs.

A third paper asked voters to choose between keeping the existing ‘first past the post’ Parliamentary system or to change to the alternative vote (AV).

Some voters thought having three ballot papers on one day was too confusing.
Patrick Lowrie, 70, and Carol Lowrie, 65, both voted Labour and yes to AV at the polling station at Flint Town Hall.

“I think it’s quite complicated,” said Patrick. “It wasn’t straightforward at all.”
Susan Kinnair, 60, also voted yes to AV and chose Labour candidate Sandy Mewies for her Assembly vote.

She said: “I’ve had plenty of leaflets and there’s been lots of information on television.

“I think having three on the same day is a bit confusing for older people, though.”

At Rhosddu Community Centre in Wrexham, Arthur Smallman also voted for Labour and yes to AV.

He said: “I voted for Lesley Griffiths as I always support Labour.

“I don’t agree with either of the coalition parties and I think they’ve broken a lot of promises.”

His wife Elaine said: “I’ve also voted for Lesley Griffiths as I think Labour are the best choice for Wrexham.”

She added: “Every vote counts so it’s important to use it."

Patricia Fazackerly, 85, backed the Liberal Democrats at the Memorial Hall in Sychdyn.

“I voted yes to AV,” she said. “I can’t bear the thought of Clegg being beaten.

“If the new system has any problems I’m sure they could sort it out with a bit of time.”

But Steve Wilson from Rhosddu did not favour the alternative voting system.

He said: “I don’t think it’s an improvement on the current system.

“If it goes through it will be more complicated, costly and time consuming. I always vote at every election – if you’ve got the vote you should use it otherwise there’s no use complaining afterwards.”

George Bostock from Rhosddu also said he thought it was important to vote.

He said: “I’ve come to vote on both matters but I think that the Assembly elections are much more important than the AV referendum.

“If people can vote they should do it.”

Votes will be counted today in Flint Pavilion for Flintshire and Glyndwr University for Wrexham.

The regional vote results will then be phoned through to be announced at Denbigh Leisure Centre.

With a national turnout of 42% the clearest message to politicians is that people don't care much about the Assembly and recognise that it's Westminster who pull the strings in Wales...running a campaign by post is clearly not a great way to engage with the electorate

In three constituencies in Nth Wales 63% or less of the electorate failed to vote and in the fourth it was 57%.....doesn't say a lot for people respect for the Welsh Assembly

overall a good showing by Mr Camerons party, nit what the socialists like to hear though, we should cut our ties with the hand wringing limp loony liberals we would win a general election hands down right now. Keep up the excellent work David

Hi ACahill,I agree.Over half of wales just didn't give a toss, but these suited upstart self important pompous ars*holes will tell us they have a mandate!!.I heard Marek made an fool of himself at the count, when he lost he started insulting Lesley Griffiths(who won).Marc Jones came last for Plaid, which is a bit suprising. It looks like the old Tory Labour divide will dominate from now on.

Tommy....Plaid paid the price for their wooly headed subservience to Labour during the last Assembly...just as the LibDems did in England and Scotland....it doesn't suprise me that Marc Jones didn't do so well considering lots of people in Whitegate don't know he's their Ward Cllr

plainspeaking..Cameron belong to a morally degenerate elite who are their to serve their own interests and the interests of the super rich..unless you fit into those catergories they wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire,so grow up and stop fooling yourself.

Hi A cahill...I agree it was cringing watching Plaid become New Labour clones and after years of opposition they tried to justify embracing right wing policies by calling on the old chestnut of"realities of office".The Labour/Plaid coalition has probably put and end to Plaids hopes for the next decade at least.

Tory voters always turn out to support their party as they only look after themselves and dont give a toss about the suffering of others , the Lie/Dims got the kicking from the UK voters because they have not been the moderating force many people expected them to be, the Tories are the nasty party and always will be. As for Lab , time will tell if they have left NL behind and returned to their roots.

As for the turnout , people seem more interested in X Factor , drinking and football , look at the number of posts football related stories on this site get compared to articles relating to politics .

Lib...we must also take a look at the press coverage given to the parties and the issues...a paper that claims to be Wrexhams leading newspaper failed to give any coverage...yet AV was mentioned but only when the Westminster leaders had something to say

tommy, well i guess i must fit into that bracket then, as im not feeling any pain in my wallet, still saving still spending. Keep up the excellent work Mr Cameron, cuts must be made thanks to the socialist govt ...oh no wait a minute no lets get red and blame the bankers... tosh

Cahill, I hope you saw Tom Elliot put your countrymen in their place

  13. Posted by: tommy at 09:53 on 10 May 2011 Report

Plain speaking..We have NEVER had a socialist government in the UK,Nu-Labour were just a reflection of Old Tory.Your good self like so many millions of people in this country failed to realise the dynamic and profounfd revolution that has taken place in the UK when the banks were bailed out.Effectively we then had a lobbying group in complete control of government policy.Do you think that is a good thing?...let's get this debate rolling here and now.

  14. Posted by: a cahill at 10:07 on 10 May 2011 Report

Boycs....Who is Tom Elliot ?...obviously that I didn't see my country men being put anywhere particularly in their place...and it seems that a lot of your countrymen were put in their place particularly in stoke where it was total meltdown for the BNP

  15. Posted by: a cahill at 10:18 on 10 May 2011 Report

Hi Tommy....that would be a pretty short debate....anyone with half a brain cell to their credit would realise that it's big business and the trades union movement who supply the funding to keep the political parties in existence...buying influence is the name of the game with the morsels being given to the working class to keep them in line

  16. Posted by: Boycs at 12:04 on 10 May 2011 Report

Cahill, what are you on about. Every british person then?

  17. Posted by: a cahill at 10:00 on 11 May 2011 Report

Boycs...have you noticed the prevalence of ten-a- penny degree holders knocking about these days...media,computer studies and humanities...all part of the effort to be "inclusive" and to ensure that people from poorer backgrounds can never claim they were allowed to slip through the "Net" education wise

  18. Posted by: Boycs at 11:12 on 11 May 2011 Report

I was actually referring to the comment about my countrymen as you put it and then you mentioning the bnp. Do elaborate. As for degrees, yes exactly, its the moronic working classes with barely a brain cell claiming the 'elite' get everything so in order to cater for the dumbkopfs we have to let everyone into university lowering the value of degrees, all in the name of equality.

  19. Posted by: tommy at 11:31 on 12 May 2011 Report

Hi Boyc...why do you hate the working classes so much. You should remember that it is the working classes and not the inbred immoral so called elite of this country that fought to get you the limited freedoms you now enjoy. The biggest and most successful social experiment on the planet(the UK NHS) was the brain child of an ex miner Nye Bevan.Think about it.

Strange how so called well educated people miss the sarcasm aimed at them.
