THE body of a kayaker who went missing off the coast of Anglesey has been found

Elizabeth Ashbee,53, of Shropshire, went missing on a kayaking trip off the coast of Anglesey on Sunday.

Holyhead Coastguard confirmed that a female body had been found seven miles north west of Porthdinllaen at 5.15pm yesterday.

North Wales Police confirmed today (Wednesday, September 1) that the body that that of Ms Ashbee.

Mrs Ashbee's kayak was found on a beach at Morfa Nefyn at 11.30am this morning.

Three helicopters, two lifeboat crews and three coastguard teams searched the Llyn Peninsula this afternoon for the experienced kayaker.

Ms Ashbee's belongings were found in the kayak.

Elizabeth Ashbee, 53 , was last seen by fellow kayakers around half a mile from Starvation Rock between Rhoscolyn and Rhosneigr at around 3pm yesterday afternoon.

Holyhead Coastguard manager Barry Priddis said that coastguard teams, lifeboat crews and helicopters had searched for Ms Ashbee since the alarm was raised by her group yesterday.

“The leader of the group said she was a strong character with a good will to survive and overcome adversity,” he said.

She disappeared when three of the group of five kayakers went to help a team member who has lost his paddle.

The group leader towed the kayak while two team members tied their craft to the kayak to form a raft.

Mr Priddis said that Ms Ashbeen was separated from the group as they struggled to make any headway in strong north westerly winds.

“They thought that she was going to shore to raise the alarm,” he said.

The kayakers raised the alarm at about 7.30pm after they reached Ynysoedd Duon, south of Mynydd Mawr.

A search including three lifeboat crews, four coastguard helicopter teams, RAF Valley 22 Squadron Seaking and the North Wales Police helicopter took place until 1am.

The search began again at 6.30am.

Mr Priddis said that the teams had search from Rhoscolyn down to Penrhyn Mawr near Ynys Enlli.

Holyhead and Rhoscolyn coastguards later searched around Borth Wen with SARDA dog teams.
