A BOMB disposal team was called to an Anglesey recycling plant when staff discovered a suspicious piece of metal.

The Anglesey Council-run Penhesgyn Centre near Menai Bridge was closed at around 9.25am yesterday until the Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team examined the object.

A Council spokesman said that the cone-shaped object was part of an explosive charge dating back to the 1940s amongst newspapers, but that it was not dangerous.

“Staff were concerned and erring on the side of caution they called the police who in turn contacted the bomb disposal unit,” he said.

North Wales Police confirmed that the Chester-based bomb disposal team arrived took the device away at around 12.38pm. The plant was reopened.

Penhesgyn is the largest of two recycling centres on the island and processes household waste from Anglesey and parts of Gwynedd and Conwy.
