TWO men had a lucky escape after a lifeboat team spotted their broken down boat in strong winds and choppy seas off the Anglesey coast.

Moelfre Inshore Lifeboat team launched at 4pm on Friday to help the two men, both in their twenties, after their 15 ft speed boat’s engine failed around half a mile off the lifeboat station.

Spokesman Dave Massey said:”The two occupants of the speed boat were extremely lucky today, their only means of raising the alarm was their mobile phone.

“It was very fortunate for them that some of the Moelfre Lifeboat crew were in the station and noticed them waving for help whilst attempting to row against the strong wind.”

The lifeboat crew braved a 25 knot wind to reach the stranded vessel within a minute of the call out.

The crew attached a rope to the boat and towed it into Traeth Bychan.

The men, of Ormskirk, were unhurt.

Mr Massey added that the men had lifejackets on board but did not have adequate means to call for help.

“We would always advise people to have in date Red distress flairs and a VHF radio in their boat, and know how to use it’,” he said.
