Meinir's virtual performance

AN ANGLESEY singer will be broadening her international appeal when she performs in a virtual Internet world.
Meinir Gwilym, from Llangristiolus, has already established herself as one of the most successful Welsh language performers ever, with thousands of copies of her albums sold.
And she now hopes to build on that success with the first ever Welsh language gig in the Internet based reality Second Life.
Second Life is a computer generated online world where users can create virtual copies of themselves (called avatars) and do everything you would do in the real world; like buying a house, getting married, or going to a gig.
The show will take place in Taff's Bar on the island of Cymru, which is owned by multimedia solutions company C44's director Paul Stead.
"We have a lot of live music and DJs performing in the bar," said Mr Stead. "We have a soul singer from Argentina, a pianist from London, but there aren't any Welsh language artists."
Meinir became involved in this project during an interview with Mr Stead about Second Life on her radio show. It was then that he suggested she come and perform in his virtual bar.
"It's great for the Welsh language," said Mr Stead.
"People who are in to Second Life are usually more open minded – they are open to anything. With someone like Meinir the only barrier is language.
"After we did a rehearsal quite a few people went on to her MySpace website, they texted the radio show and bought her songs from iTunes."
Due to technical restraints, only around 100 Second Life users will be able to enjoy Meinir's performance, but Mr Stead believes that at least 150 people will pass through the bar during the show.
Meinir will be performing in the Second Life world under her avatar alias Alaw Llewellyn on March 7 at 8pm (12pm Second Life time).
