YOUNG drivers are being put through their paces at a special skid school at the Anglesey Circuit.

Statistics show that young people are far more likely to be involved in a traffic accident than older drivers.

The County Council's Road Safety Team is putting Assembly funding to good use in a determined effort to tackle this issue. On Anglesey roads, two young people aged 16-25 have been killed since 2005, with another 16 seriously injured.

Skid Control experts MH Motorsport is providing students from Coleg Menai with on-road driver training.
Anglesey's Head of Highways, Dewi Williams, stressed, "One death or injury on our roads is, obviously, one too many. This specially designed training course will raise awareness amongst young drivers and could one day potentially save lives."

Instructors are using the unique Swedish SkidCar system to create a loss of control scenario to challenge and educate the drivers. The tuition also includes a braking technique demo of Anti-lock Breaking System (ABS) and non ABS vehicles.

Malcolm Hamilton, of MH Motorsport, added: "Most drivers will freeze or react incorrectly in any loss of control scenario. Our Skid Control Course can, in a matter of hours, give drivers experience of every possible skid scenario thereby creating instinctive responses and significantly reducing risks."
