THE man who introduced the colourful American Legends race cars to the UK and Europe has relocated his business to Anglesey to take advantage of the superb new facilities at the race circuit.
Phil Cooper, managing director of 600 Racing (UK), is the exclusive European distributor for Legends Cars which are 5/8th scale racers based on pre-war Ford, Chevy and Dodge bodies and powered by Yamaha motorcycle engines.
The Welsh Assembly Government's International Business Wales team in North Wales played a key role in supporting 600 Racing's expansion plans, highlighting the business benefits of Anglesey and also found suitable premises for their European distribution centre on Gaerwen Industrial Estate.
Ieuan Wyn Jones, Minister for the economy and transport, who officially opened the new circuit last year described it as an important asset for the island.
"The facilities there are first class and it is now recognised as one of the top racing circuits in Europe. It has the potential to become an important driver for the local economy attracting enthusiasts and tourists from throughout the UK.
"It's good news that 600 Racing (UK) has decided to locate its headquarters in Anglesey and that the company is already working closely with the Race Circuit to maximise this investment."
Phil Cooper described the move to Anglesey as a golden opportunity.
"Being based so close to a race track with all these facilities is fantastic, a lot of money has been spent upgrading it and it is now one of the best tracks in the UK.
"It means I can distribute the cars and parts and run my business and if someone wants to test a car we can do it at the drop of a hat whereas at other circuits you often have to pre book weeks in advance."
The company is now gearing up for the start of the new season at Easter in Brands Hatch where there will be three Legends race events each day.
