Heroic lifeboat crew remembered
HOLYHEAD'S RNLI crew paid tribute to their predecessors last Friday, on the 100th anniversary of one of Wales' most courageous sea rescues.
Joined by relatives of some of the crew who aided the stricken Liverpool steamer SS Harold, the team sailed out to where, in 1908, the
RNLI crew battled gale force winds and violent seas to rescue the crew of the Harold, earning 11 gallantry medals for their efforts.
RNLI Holyhead Coxswain Brian Thomson said: "The Holyhead lifeboat Duke of Northumberland was in great danger of being flung against the steamer and destroyed – we are very proud of their achievement and want to honour their courage and skill.
"Despite the fact the charity provides the very best to ensure the safety of its crews, the sea remains a dangerous place to be - the one thing that hasn't changed in the last 100 years is the commitment and selfless of RNLI volunteers who are always prepared to put to sea to save lives 24/7, whatever the weather."
Former RNLI crew member Leslie Jones will also honour the centenary of the rescue, with a presentation at the Ucheldre Centre on March 8.
