Firefighters show student nurses the ropes
STUDENT nurses from Bangor University visited Wrexham fire station to experience first hand the reality of a road traffic collision scene.
The students had the opportunity to take part in a simulated crash rescue situation, where firefighters used cutting gear to release a casualty from a vehicle on the station yard.
The group of students have been studying trauma treatment this week, and have had input in lectures by Wrexham White Watch crew manager Andy Williams.
He said: "The students spent the afternoon on the station today taking part in a graphic reconstruction of the aftermath of a road traffic collision, with input from The Welsh Ambulance Service and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
"I believe that it will be of great benefit to them in understanding what can happen to a casualty before they are admitted to A & E."
Carol Griffiths, lecturer for nursing studies at Arcamedies Centre of
Bangor University, added: "All the students found Andy's input fascinating, and seeing the reconstruction of the road traffic collision first hand really helped them to understand how casualties from road traffic collisions and similar incidents are treated at the scene.
"It has also been valuable so that they understand why patients react in a certain way when receiving treatment."
