Fears are growing that an Anglesey primary school could be forced to close as part of a major education shake-up.

Ysgol Gynradd Beaumaris’ closure is being considered after a report by Anglesey Council found the cost of bringing the building up to scratch would be £971,000.

Its closure would result in 37 pupils who attend Ysgol Gynradd Beaumaris transferred to Llandegfan or Llangoed schools.

An option to send the pupils to an extended Ysgol Llangoed would reportedly cost around £630,000 but achieve £109,000 of savings, while sending them to an extended Ysgol Llandegfan would cost a similar amount.

Halving the the size of Ysgol Gynradd Beaumaris or building a new £7.3m area school replacing all three are also being discussed.

Cllr Carwyn Jones, on Isle of Anglesey County Council, said: “The consultation sessions at all three schools within the Seiriol ward have been very well attended by staff, parents, governors and community members and some very pressing questions have been asked and plenty of views and opinion have been shared with the Education Officers and Portfolio Holder to consider.”

The Ysgol Gynradd Beaumaris site is also being considered as an area to build an extra care housing scheme upon.

A statement from the county council read: “Developing possible extra care facilities on this site will not affect the result of the consultation on the future of Ysgol Beaumaris.”

The public consultation remains open until July 30.
